What is an electric lawn mower?

As its name suggests, electric lawn mowers are entirely powered by electricity, unlike gasoline and battery lawn mowers.

Similar to a vacuum, before starting your mowing session, simply plug in your mowers cord, and you're ready to go!

When mowing your garden with an electric lawn mower, a power socket must always be within reach; otherwise, you won't be able to mow since this type of mowers has no internal battery or gas motor that'll let you mow any further than the cable allows.

You must pay close attention to the power cord and make sure it's always behind the mower to avoid running over it and cutting the cord.

Thanks to their zero carbon footprint electric motors, these types of lawn mowers are particularly environment-friendly. If you don't want to inhale exhaust fumes during mowing, you could go either one of our electric lawn mowers listed here.

Lower noise level for electric mowers

The noise level of these lightweight, easy to manoeuver and flexible lawnmowers is usually a bit lower than gas powered lawn mowers. But you shouldn't buy into the advertising hype because the difference isn't that significant. An average electric lawn mower usually emits 70 db of noise, for comparison, this is close to a car driving at 60 miles per hour. Best gas lawn mowers on the other hand, emits around 90-100 decibels.  Similar to a revving motorcycle. Wearing hearing protection while mowing with a gas mower is highly recommended. But it is not necessary for electric lawn mowers unless you're going to be mowing for many hours, in that case, noise level could become unpleasant.

Which is the best electric lawnmower?

Very good electric lawnmowers are available from Bosch, Hecht, GARDENA and Honda. Which model is the best for you, however, depends mainly on the size and condition of lawn.

In our large electric lawnmower comparison, you can quickly and easily find the best electric models in the overview. Use the filter functions to adapt the selection to your needs.

How much does an electric lawnmower cost?

A good and a reliable electric lawn mower will cost you around at least 250 - 400 USD. Depending on the extra features, size and models,  your initial investment is likely to go up. In our comparison table you will find the best electric lawn mower models including a price comparison.

How many amps does an electric lawn mower use?

New electric lawn mowers with modern brushless motors in average draw 5 to 10 amps. These motors produce no harmful emissions and are environmentally friendly.

Of course the consumption will hugely depend on the size of your lawn and wattage of the engine, but you can make the calculation yourself for the model you're interested in.

An average electric lawn mower sold in the United States has a 1400 Watt motor. Mowing season usually starts around April and lasts until October. If we were to assume you're going to be running your electric mower for about 30 minutes every two weeks, you're going to be consuming 9.8 kWh of energy, approximately.

The average price people in the United States pay for electricity is about 12 cents per kilowatt-hour.

When we do the math an average lawn mower will consume $1.2 worth of electricity.

Gas lawn mowers vs electric lawn mowers

First of all electric mowers offer much more flexibility thanks to their lightweight small electric motors. It lets you easily carry it around the yard, over stairs and obstacles. They might be problematic when dealing with bushy and long grass, simply because electric motors do not have high enough power to handle the heavy-duty work.

However, industrial ride on electric lawn mowers doesn't fall behind their gasoline-powered counterparts since they're made for heavy-duty commercial work. They're also easier to use on sloping and even uneven terrain.

Handy electric lawn mowers come in different sizes, usually ranging between 10 inches to 30 inches.  Due to their dependence on the power cord, they work best for gardeners with small yards ranging from 50mt to 600mt max.

If you're eyeing on an electric mower its important to make sure there arent many trees, bushes, big rocks and furniture in your lawn because power cord could be a little problematic.

If this is the case, and you're not interested in a gas lawn mower, buying a battery-powered lawn mower could suit you better. They combine the flexibility of a gas mower with the advantages of an electric mower.

They usually deploy a bit weaker motor, but the cordless design won't disrupt your work.

Advantages of electric lawnmowers?

  • Environmentally friendly
  • No harmful exhaust fumes
  • About 20dB less noise compared to gas mowers
  • Lightweight and flexible in handling
  • Many functions such as mulching possible
  • Requires less maintenance

Electric lawn mower manufacturers

There are more companies producing electric mowers than gas models these days due to the rise in consumers demanding environmentally friendly mowers.

Almost all major lawnmower manufacturers offer electrically powered equipment. Bosch, GARDENA, Blue Bird, Snapper, Oleo-mac, Echo, AL-KO, Husqvarna, AL-KO and WOLF-Garten particularly worth looking at.

Some suppliers have even specialised completely in electric lawnmowers and now no longer offer petrol-powered equipment at all, such as Green Gear.

More and more garden owners today prefer the more handy and quieter electric mowers.

Electric lawn mower maintenance

Since electric lawn mowers do not require regular gasoline and oil fills, or spark plugs change, these machines require very little maintenance once or twice a year. Even none if you clean the mud and grass on it after mowing. However, you must avoid using water, as it can penetrate the mower body and cause a short circuit and corrosion. It is also advisable to check the cutting blade regularly, as frequent use, stones and other hard objects can cause it to wear out and become blurred over time.

Before carrying out any maintenance work on the mower itself or the cutting blades, unplug its cable to avoid accidentally running the machine and injuring yourself seriously.

For more information on care of the equipment, please refer to our lawnmower guide. Inexperienced users are therefore advised to visit a professional service workshop.

When storing your lawn mower for the winter, always choose a dry location to avoid corrosion.
